Overfishing, we’re in deep!

Over three quarters of our planet are covered by the ocean and this figure is expanding everyday, billions of people are depending on the oceans stock on a daily basis and by now the world has hit boiling point. Overfishing is the result of ignorance and an over zealous demand for the oceans supply, it is currently the most dangerous threat that our oceans are facing today. Governments however seem to be ignoring the seriousness of this issue, we are at serious risk of loosing a valuable food source that not just us as humans depend on but also the other creatures of the sea. The UN food Agriculture Organization released  facts on the current status of our ocean and it was a  rather sad conclusion. Over 25% of the worlds fish stock is either over exploited or depleted.

The best example of ecological and economical dangers of overfishing is found in Newfoundland, Canada when in 1992 the ever popular cod came to a sudden full stop when at the start of the fishing season no cod what so ever appeared. Now 15 years later many fishermen are still waiting for the return of the cod and many communities still have not recovered from the removal of the regions most important driver.

As a result of our actions our oceans are therefore at a risk of collapse, people should start showing a greater interest in the damages we are doing to our oceans and food sources, the word has to be spread and we have to be more aware and cautious of what we are eating, for example if you do eat fish try and eat one with the lowest impact.  If people are going to try and reverse this destruction it needs to be acted on now if we are to have any chance of  ending this.
