Go green in your home!
Most home’s nowadays are lacking greatly in ways to be healthy to the environment. The quality of the air inside the home is a serious neglected issue, studies have shown that air indoors can even be more polluted than outside air even in the largest cities. There are many ways that our homes can be safer for ourselves and children while protecting our planet. For a start changing your light bulbs to more energy efficient compact fluorescents and if possible changing your heater to to a solar hot water heater.
For your kitchen have two separate bins one for non-recyclable waste and the other for left over rubbish such as food scraps, paper and tin. A lidded box is essential for food scaps, a small sized one would be better as it more likely to encourage regular emptying and cleaning while stops bacteria building up. A clean ice-cream tub would work out perfectly. Old tin cans and metal products make up about 8% of the average households rubbish bin contents, according to facts in 2003 only 33% of this was recycled.
To avoid this there is domestic can crushers can be purchases which will help to crush your cans down to a third of their original size. Some are specifically for food cans others may be just for drink cans so remember to do research before purchasing, you may be better of with one of each in your home. Remember to recycle your old newspapers and magazines if your neighborhood does not provide a recycle friendly service then please find where you can dispose of them yourself and make the trip at least once a week.
One final and one of the most important thing to remember when going green in your home is to save your water supply, a family of four uses over 400 gallons a day, remember to not let water run while using the sink, try to avoid long showers and baths when possible.Buy high-efficient plumbing fixtures & appliance and try and fix all leaks as soon as possible as this can lead to a big waste of water.
