Swine Flu Scare? Avoid Alcohol Based Hand Sanitizers!

howitworksMy son’s school opening has been pushed back a week from its original date because of the swine flu scare. The school sent out a memo to all parents, reminding all of us on the importance of keeping healthy by doing the basic — like washing our hands and using an alcohol based sanitizer, if possible.

What many people may not understand is an alcohol based hand sanitizer may not be so safe in the hands of children. If parents are not to careful about it, curious kids who may try to ingest this gel like formula, can get seriously ill from it. This product contains Triclosan, which is actually a pesticide, as classified by the EPA. Triclosan has also been linked to skin cancer. Search the internet and you will find lawsuits pertaining to this. Imagine applying this pesticide on your children’s hands.

So what’s a parent to do? Not to scare you into panic, there is, of course a solution, like choosing an alternative soap or a non-alcohol based hand sanitizer.
