NIKE REUSE A SHOE

Nike has also been participating in helping our environment. Although they have started this process since the early 1990′s, it’s sad to say that I only heard about it recently.

Nike has a REUSE A SHOE PROGRAM

So, what is Reuse a shoe program? According to Nike,”

Nearly two decades ago, Nike began looking for a way to reduce the company’s environmental footprint and reduce the amount of shoes that ended up in landfills. Nike first started by collecting athletic shoes at key retail locations and shortly thereafter teamed up with the National Recycling Coalition to establish shoe collections in communities across the country.”

The program starts with you. All you have to do is drop off your old sneakers, athletic shoes to any Reuse A shoe collection or shoe drive event.

Nike then ships the shoes to their processing centers. According to Nike “We also look for the most carbon-efficient shipping methods possible, such as reaching the maximum capacity for shipments.

Then comes the grinding process.

What they do is separate them and turn them into a product they call Nike Grind, which can be best described as a foamy, rubbery popcorn that can be used for all sorts of things.

If you think your shoes are so torn out and had their last play, think again. With Nike grind, they can be a part of a basketball court, tracks or playing fields.  Pre-consumer material could also be a part of new shoes and apparels.

Nike has a wonderful way of being a part of helping our planet through recycling. It’s a good way for them to take full responsibility of the life cycle of their products.imageaxd1
