5 cents Per Plastic Bag in Toronto
Residents of Toronto, Canada are required to pay around 5 cents per plastic bag, each and every time they ask this from a retailer. This is a new council ordinance passed only in the recent week in an effort to reduce landfill waste to as much as 70%.
The city council is also running a plastic bag recycling program requiring retailers to instead offer biodegradable bags. Money collected from this will not actually go to the stores or the city council. Instead, it will serve as donations for the city’s many out-reach programs.
With this, Toronto joins other major bustling cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles where plastic bags have already been previously banned. Next year Washington DC intends to implement the same thing.
Shoppers in this places, and maybe anywhere in the world, might actually now consider bringing your own recyclable bags when purchasing something next time.
