Obama Cuts Light Use
Fluorescent and incandescent light use will have stricter efficiency requirements as imposed by President Obama the
other day, in order to reduce electricity use to as much as 25%. This new rule is to take effect in the year 2012 and it is expected to save America some $4 billion.
This move makes such a big impact to the environment and is considered “the biggest efficiency savings from any appliance standard ever”, according to Steven Nadel, the director of the organization, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.
President Obama, in his announcement said: “This simple action holds enormous promise because 7 percent of all the energy consumed in America is used to light our homes and our businesses.”
Fluorescent lamps, those common tubular office lights we see in many offices and incandescent reflector lamps usually found in tracks, are what is basically covered by this new rule.
The Energy Department has yet to update the requirements, which has last been established in 1992.
