The Artic Ice is Melting, Melting Away

rNASA reports that since 2004, ice formation in the artic has been “thinning dramatically”. While this is knowledge that has been a fact for many years, new satellite images show that the thicker ice are already melting, and the thinner ice, which usually melts away during the summer season, is what remains on the surface. In other words, there isn’t enough solid mass in this region as what it is used to be.

Says Ron Kwok, from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California: “We’re losing a lot more of the old ice (thicker ice), and that’s significant. Basically we knew how much the area (of ice) was shrinking, but we didn’t know how thick it was. If we know how much is floating on top, we can use that to compute the rest of the ice thickness.”
