IQ of Today’s Kids Diminishing, No Thanks to Air Pollution
Can you believe this?
A study conducted by the monthly magazine, Pediatrics, showed that air pollution in urban areas have somehow affected the IQ points of many of the children residing in the district. The study was done in Washington Heights, Harlem, and the South Bronx in New York with participants composed of mother who are either already pregnant. These moms were apparently made to wear air monitors while pregnant, with the monitor measuring the level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exposure. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs is actually a chemical particle that comes from tobacco, oil, gas, diesel or coal, which as we should be aware, is a major pollutant in a bustling city.
The kids borne out of this experiment were made to take tests at the age of five and from there came the astonishing results.
According to the reports:
140 of the 249 children tested were found to have had “high PAH exposure”, and were found to have 4.31-4.67 fewer IQ points than their lesser- exposed peers, a figure that a doctor working on the project likened to “low level lead exposure.”
The research was supposedly funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the Environmental Protection Agency of the government and several private foundations.
