Japan’s Electric Bicycles Are Rising in Demand
I would have wondered — why the need for electric bicycles when regular bicycles would do? But Japan’s latest motor-assisted bikes, which uses a battery pack and a small motor, makes cycling a lot faster, fun and practical.
Cycling uphill with this beauty, while hoarding up a load, would have to be easy that even the elderly and housewives are warming up to the newest eco-friendly ride. In fact, sales and demand for this electric bikes have increased in the last year because it’s been proven that it is more affordable and so much greener than cars, and so much more practical than regular bicycles.
The bike’s maker, Yamaha, have had a test-ride even for the bikes last Friday and many who came have been quite pleased with it. The bikes are featured with a range of 39 km (24 miles). Charging time takes about two hours only, which has been determined to cost only about 10 cents. The only thing that’s probably an “expense” is that batteries need to be changed every two years, at the cost of $250.
Still, it’s not such a bad deal. Says Masanori Kobayashi, an official at Yamaha: “A lot of our customers say their range of activity on a bicycle has expanded. They’re going places where they would normally take their car or a taxi.”
Other electric bike makers like Panasonic, Sanyo Electric and Bridgestone are also enthusiastic about the response from the market and expects this to grow in Europe where bikes are really in demand. Sanyo even has a more expensive model made with carbon composite framing.
An electric bike costs anywhere between $800 to $2000, depending on features.
