Pollution Causes Death of Fishes in China

CHINA FEATURE PACKAGE EARTH DAY 2008

It’s sad to listen to news about animals dying because of us. They die because of our lack of awareness against the environment. Animals are important in the cycle of human lives. They too have the rights to live and be free.

In china thousand of fishes die because of pollution. From China Daily,

CHINA—On July 11, pollution and extreme hot weather caused the sudden death of over 100,000 kilograms (220,000 pounds) of fish in Guanqiao Lake, Donghu, Wuhan city. Eight fishing boats were collecting as much of the dead fish as they could to prevent the further deterioration of the water quality.

According to local official, the water body of the lake is over nutrient and the authority has banned fishery in the lake, but local residents just ignored the regulation.

However, local residents said the pollution issue has a long history. Although the local government has sent people to collect rubbish and spread medicine in the water, it did not solve the problems from the root—several sewage discharge outlets along the lake. a

Large quantities of dead fish floats on Guanqiao Lake in Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province July 11, 2007. Severe pollution, caused by untreated industrial waste and continuous scorching heat resulted in the deaths of 50,000 kg of fish in the lake, setting off the stench to local villagers around the lake. =

It really hurts me to see news and photos of these tragic events. Some are practicing dynamite fishing just to capture fishes. Through those means thousand fishes die, and eventually corals to. Please stop and think about before throwing your waste.

China’s pollution is a huge problem that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. This article was a great supplement to my knowledge about pollution in Asia. I read a Special Article at the Asia Economic Institute (www.asiaecon.org) titled, “China’s Pollution and Alternative Measures to Save the Environment” that highlighted the effects of China’s industrialization on Chinese citizens’ health and the rest of the world. It also offered alternative ideas, such as Nuclear Energy and China’s efforts to address the issue.
