Go Green, Save Green
I always wonder why going eco-friendly seems to cost a bit more extra. I mean, look at all those solar powered houses…just building them takes a lot more money. And how about concentrating on a meat-less diet, for instance. A friend of mine tried that for a month and their food bill doubled because they were going for gourmet vegetarian treats. Granted in the long run, everything should pay off and this will reduce expenses drastically as one adjusts to the change in lifestyle. But there must always be a better way to practice living green without having to spend so much…especially when one is just beginning to do this.
So, here are just some of the things I think should help ease yourself into a more greener you, without having to break the bank…
- If you should go meatless, or become a vegetarian, then learn to grow your own produce instead of buying them from gourmet stores and such. I’m sure there are some idle, neglected space in your house which you can grow some. If not, some vegetables can easily grow in pots. Growing your own will help with the grocery bill as you don’t also have a lot of wastage stocking them. Also, you get fresh food every time, which should taste better than mass-produced kind you see the the stores.
- Don’t rush away to buy the latest gadgets and technology. First of all, they are a lot more expensive. And secondly, think of what you really need instead of what cool future the gadget has. If you don’t really need a cellphone that is also a swiss army knife, then why buy it? New technology now, is old technology three months later. You save on money, and you won’t have a drawer full of old gadgets you will never use anymore.
- Always carry a canvas tote bag when you’re out shopping. It comes in handy. Baggers don’t have to put the stuff you bought in plastic, since you have your bag.
- Unplug electrical connections when you leave the house. I know, the TV has a stand by option, but you really save a lot more if you unplug the set altogether, instead of letting it sit for eight hours while you’re in the office.
- Use a bicycle or just walk when going to the next block, the drugstore or the grocery. Save on gas and get that much needed exercise to keep your heart fit and pumping!
