Go Green Even While On Facebook

A new Facebook application has been created by this student from the University of York. It’s the kind of application that helps monitor how much energy has been used in the home.

The developer is Derek Foster and the application is called WattUp. It also works to asses the carbon footprints emitted in the house. The developer did this for his school project in Human-centred Interactive Technologies.

Says Derek Foster: “With so many people using Facebook now, it seemed like a novel approach to incorporate other elements of our lifestyle, such as our household energy consumption, into our online social profiles. By using Facebook as the delivery platform it introduces social psychology elements such as peer-pressure and normative behaviour between friends which can introduce competitiveness to reduce energy usage.”
