Making Grilling Eco-Friendly
Grilling has its perks. Aside from all the healthy, yummy, juicy food you can eat, it’s also a fun way to enjoy time well-spent with a bunch of friends and family. But as much as an average American enjoys this as part of outdoor fun, grilling need not be a bridle to practicing green living. You can still enjoy all that it offers but at least make an effort to “go green†when cooking in the backyard.
So, what’s the best, greenest way to grilling food?
This been an ongoing debate among those who enjoy grilling, especially since in the United States, gas grills are better preferred than electric grill or charcoal grilling.
But which method does one actually use that would benefit the earth more?
Your Choice of Charcoal, Electric or Gas
They say that nothing tastes better than food grilled from charcoal. Scientists claim, however, that charcoal grill emits carbon more than a gas grill. In combination with lighter fluids, which you’ll need to light up and start heat, the effect of charcoal grilling proves to be more damaging to the earth’s ozone layer. Prolonged exposure to it may lead to health problems, too. There is a way to minimize all of these effects though, beginning with using lump charcoal instead of briquettes and making sure that airflow around the grill is well-regulated.
Gas grills, similar to lynx grills, more often than not, need petroleum for it to function well. Petroleum, as we know, is a non-renewable resource, thus it’s bad for the earth. However, gas grills emit smoke less, so that takes care of problems with air pollution. Also, gas grills are the easiest to clean and faster to use so it’s quiet efficient and ever dependable all year round. You can minimize the ill-effects of using a gas grill by going for a non-petroleum based gas.
The third and last method, the electric grill, has a high emission level, if not the highest, per hour. Just think of the amount of energy an electric grill transfers. So, to lessen its impact on the environment, use electric grills only as a last choice. Or use it if your source of electricity is from renewable resources.
Because grilling has always been so popular, many grill manufacturers, such as those from Lynx grills, have already made changes to the features they have for its latest models to accommodate a greener way of grilling. We’re already seeing a few hybrid models in the market. It should hopefully change the way grilling is done and thus help the environment.
Lynx grills, for instance, a leader in the industry and has been in production of outdoor grills for decades, has made some big improvements with its knob and handles, its capacity transformers and the overall functionality of their product, just to name a few.
The Bottom Line…
Grilling has its good and bad points. But man has been grilling food since he first discovered fire. It remains to be a popular method for cooking and nothing will change that. What we can change, however, is the way we mind for our environment whenever we’re in the backyard enjoying the grill. Whether we are grilling via charcoal, electricity or gas, the key to helping the earth is in knowing the good and bad points of using such methods and finding ways to contribute less harm to the earth’s carbon footprint when we’re using these.
