Cash For Clunkers Benefits with Fuel Efficiency Up To 58%
In spite of all the criticisms the Cash For Clunkers program received, a report now says that it actually has benefitted the environment with a fuel efficiency upgrade of about 58%.
The program apparently collected about 700,000 vehicles and all of these will be crushed at the junk yard, with an average fuel efficiency of about 15.8 mpg (newly purchased vehicles have about 24.9 mpg, the report says).
Critics of this government initiative first said the effectiveness of Cash For Clunkers to the environment will have very little contributive value. This debunks what critics are saying now and the government must be quite pleased with this, for sure.
While trucks comprised 84 percent of vehicles traded in, only 41 percent of new vehicles purchased were trucks. Nearly 117,000 large pickups or vans were traded in, but only 46,838 new ones were purchased. A total of 8,134 heavy trucks were traded in and just 2,408 new heavy trucks purchased.
EERE reports that the average fuel economy of the new cars purchased was 19 percent better than the average fuel economy of all cars available for sale in the U.S. market.
