The Greenest Companies According to Newsweek
For most of Newsweek’s Green Ranking list, it’s those companies involved in technology, such as the software and  gadget manufacturers that dominate the list. Just look at their Top 5 out of 500 below, 4 out of 5 come from the same industry, with only one coming from the pharmaceutical unit:
1. Hewlett-Packard
“Strong programs to reduce GHG emissions. The first major IT company to report GHG emissions…
2. Dell
“Ranks 4th among the top U.S. corporate users of renewable energy; headquarters uses 100% renewable…
3. Johnson & Johnson
“Its commitment to climate change is rare for its peer group and has strong environmental…
4. Intel
“Largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in the US, equivalent to 46% of company’s US…
5. IBM
“Has had formal environmental policies since 1971. All new employees undergo environmental awareness training…
How this came about was not an easy task to do for Newsweek. For one thing, data like this isn’t easily available. The company wouldn’t want to just divulge were their uses and wastes are going. For another thing, considerations have to be made for each category as some are admittedly inherently dirtier and wasteful than others. Newsweek had environmental and business analysts to help them rank five hundred companies in the US.
So why is the magazine doing this? Newsweek, in explaining the process and methodology admits that this may be very controversial for the companies involved but says: “Our hope is to open a conversation on measuring environmental performance—an essential first step toward improving it.”
