Laundry Duty, Cutting Waste

laundry-in-machineDoing laundry is actually a chore I don’t mind as I follow a system and I am obsessed with cleaning clothes. Here’s a few tips to keep in mind to practice eco-friendly ways to washing your clothes.

First, do your laundry in batches. You not only waste water with it. You also waste your time. Following this, load your laundry to capacity. Three, four, five article of clothing will not do. Pile clothes of similar material together and avoid those mini-cycles or mini-loads. And putting together similar items should help with the drying process (e.g. don’t dry towels with t-shirt together, one is bound to remain wet longer, and you would have to do the whole thing again? Wasteful!) Make sure the settings are right. If you have to wash something that’s really soiled and dirty, use the longest cycle. If you have to wash delicates like handkerchief, it’s not right to set this for hour long washing, is it?

Use detergents, bleach and fabric softeners that are eco-friendly. There are plenty in the supermarket made from vegetable based ingredients. Get those dryer balls. These help speed up drying in no time and is also deemed environmentally safe.

If your machine has an auto button, consider using it. It will shut down what needs to be shut down thus eliminating needless cycles that sometimes run for hours because you forgot you were doing laundry.

Go old school and hang the clothes to dry, if the weather permits it.
