Recyclable Cardboard Computer Casing

Screen shot 2009-10-04 at 10.17.05 AMA student from the University of Houston has found another way to recycle cardboard boxes and make them into something useful like a cardboard computer case. This item, from Brendan Macaluso who created this as part of his graduate thesis, requires no more screws to put together, thus requiring less manufacturing and disassembly. Because it is of cardboard material, the computer case is of course, recyclable and very, very light compared to regular computers.

The cardboard computer casing features eight USB ports, an area which includes a motherboard with processor, memory, power supply and hard drive.

What he developed continues to pave way for more disposables for high tech items. This is especially helpful since many consumers usually replace their gadgets and other technology in an average of three years.

Macaluso says, via Houston Chronicle: “We don’t realize how much effort it takes to do. A computer is something that will be disposed of and we’ll dispose of it because of its finite life, so why do we put so much effort into producing it? I wanted to address three things: How do we manufacture things, how do we use them and how do we ultimately dispose of it?”

Macaluso is currently negotiating with manufacturers and retailers for the sale and distribution of this kind of casing. Whether it will be welcomed by the general consuming public or not, this remains to be seen.
