One of the largest private commercial bank in Qatar, the Doha Bank, has just launched their Go Green Visa Credit Card, together with Visa Inc.

This innovative card is eco-friendly in the sense that the tiny plastic is made from bio-degradable materials. Additionally, access to the account is possible electronically, thus eliminating the need for prints on papers. However, if this in fact needed, the printed material will be done also using recycled items.

There’s more to it with the card though. Every time a card holder makes his purchase using this card, 1% of it will be converted to “green points”. This points, once accumulated will be donated to the green causes of the country, particularly, the tree planting initiatives in Qatar.

Says the bank’s CEO, R Seetharaman, of this innovation:

“Doha Bank has always been passionate about Mother Nature. We’ve pioneered the Green Banking paperless concept by getting customers to open new Green accounts. With the new Go-Green Card we hope to maintain our position as the Best Green Bank in the Middle East and contribute to a cleaner and greener Qatar.”

UNESCO Ecological Advisor for Qatar, meanwhile, hails this latest idea from Doha Bank:

UNESCO and Doha Bank have signed an agreement that fosters a long-term partnership covering a wide array of environmental activities including a Certificate for Ecoschools as well as the Arab Recycling Initiative. The Go Green Credit Card of Doha Bank is a valuable product which donates a portion of the funds to a green cause. UNESCO considers cooperation with the private sector as a necessity and shall be happy to work in close partnership with Doha Bank.”
