Recycle Your Old Jeans in Plenty of Ways

jeans_533 Perhaps the most basic item you can find in your closet which you can recycle and reuse into many different items is the ever trusty denim jeans. Most people own one and some even own a pair that has been worn for decades. This item of clothing isn’t immediately one you’d think of retiring or disposing as it can last you years of wear and tear. However, if you do find that you need to get new ones, then don’t throw the old pair away. You can use this for other things.

For one thing, jeans can be given away. Used jeans are pretty much welcomed in many second hand thrift stores, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross or other charity sites. These jeans reach the shores overseas, to be given away to the needy.

Now if you don’t prefer that, you can do many projects involving the use of denim as basic fabric. I’ve seen plenty of jeans that have been made into trendy tote bags or tiny little durable pouches for your gadgets. I’ve also seen jeans that have been turned into chair upholstery or a cozy pet bed. Though I can’t imagine how comfortable that is, there are those that actually like this.

Another project is to perhaps update your  jeans and turn it into shorts or tokong (pedal pushers). Give new  breath and life to your old jeans by changing it’s style.

Old jeans can also be turned into rugs. My grandmother used to do these and make scraps out of denims that no longer fit us.

Regarding the mention of The Salvation Army shipping jeans overseas in the above post,The Salvation Army first makes every attempt to re-sell used,in-kind donations in one of our 1,300 Thrift/Family Stores nationwide. These stores not only serve as an affordable shopping option for those on low budgets, but are also the primary source of funding for 150 Adult Rehabilitation Centers (ARCs) across the country that serve over 175,000 people per year.

At times, our inventory is given away for free during local emergencies or disasters. Even still, about 1/3 of all in-kind donations, including clothing, given to the Army Thrift Stores are not sellable because of extreme wear and tear or because an item is not in working order. Each item is given multiple chances at life including being put up at monthly auctions, placed in “free” boxes at some stores, and/or processed for recycling and are turned into income for the store. The recycling of unwearable clothing is a large part of the Army’s intake and review process for donations. Unwearable items are baled and sold by the pound as textiles. Depending on the decision of the individual merchants, unsold clothing could be used for rags, carpet padding or eventually re-sold in foreign markets.

If items go without purchase or claim and cannot be recycled, items will be thrown away at the expense of The Salvation Army, which cuts into the funding for ARCs.
