Green Grocery Shopping Tips
Every smart homemaker knows to do a list before grocery shopping, one that includes a couple of do’s and don’ts so that purchases stay on the budget and shopping is brisk and easy.
But not everyone has list for “green” grocery shopping. That’s right, there is such a thing, too. With so many items in the grocery, it’s easy to let consumerism cloud our choices.
But we think it’s time we all learn to adapt this one to experience a healthier, more economical purchase. Here are a few tips:
1. Fresh is always better than canned. Not only are they healthier because they are not processed, they use up less energy to make or manufacture as well.
2. Choose products that are packed in recycled paper rather than plastic wrappers, such as bread or cookies.
3. Avoid those individually packed, smaller, personal items, when you can have the whole thing for a bigger pack, with consideration to how much your family can consume in a month, such as cheese or milk. Less is wasted when you do this, as it takes less and less items to recycle.
4. Avoid those pre-packed meat. Do take time to go to the counter and select what you need in exact amounts.
5. And of course, shop using recyclable bags. Or have it packed in cartons rather than plastic bags.
