Plastic Furniture On The Rise

Screen shot 2009-11-05 at 5.22.23 AM With the recent experience we’ve had with flooding, for many of my friends and neighbors who have lost a lot of their belongings, it seems as though plastic furniture is becoming more and more appealing. Plastic furniture has been around for awhile and back in the 60’s, this used to be a big home design fad. Today, plastic furniture is updated, evolved, more colorful, and well, kinda groovy in form and function.

Though plastic may be cheap, there are now very many elegant options when it comes to designs and styles. There are plastic chairs sold by Philippe Starck, an Italian furniture design company, which are made from polycarbonate, yet they look so classy, as the chairs are inspired from traditional Louis XV chair, modern but very classic. For a really beautiful chair like this, one would have to shell out about $400 only. If it wasn’t made of plastic, it would have already cost more.

That’s the thing about plastic furniture, too. It’s so much more affordable, so much more durable it can withstand a lot of wear and tear. It’s also very easy to clean, especially if your household has kids around.

However, once plastic furniture is broken, it cannot be repaired like wood or metal furniture, or worse, recycled, which is why some designers are now opting for more recycled plastic content with their designs.

Plastic furniture today now also come in sleeker finishes like metallics. They’re even made to replace glass furniture for the very reasons that it’s much more durable and cheap.
