The Sheraton Hotel

For those visiting Latin American this year you might be pleasantly surprised to discover a lot of green hotels. One that currently stands out is the stunning Sheraton Hotel in Montevideo Uruguay. Already a well known hotel name, the Sheraton has committed itself to applying the “green” philosophy to different areas, from saving on printing, using compact fluorescent lamps, recycling trash and even tree planting.

On the terrace of the hotel you have solar panels which are used to heat water for the rooms. This final stage was only completed recently. The investment of US 80,000 is expected to be recovered in two years or less of energy savings. It goes to show this kind of positive change is beneficial in so many ways.

This is the first Sheraton Hotel in Latin America to change to an Eco system. The ultimate goal is to quickly follow suit in the other hotels. Some other “green” commitment undertaken by Sheraton include: the end of guests receiving a printed edition of a paper, instead they will get on kindle, which is a digital screen for e-books. This saves on printing in a very large way.

Dinner by candlelight is also a new addition, again resulting in less printing and paper used.  In each bedroom compact fluorescent lights are used and thermostats control the air conditioning unit. All this excellent changes really show just how far a hotel can come when living up to their “green” commitment. More chains are soon to follow and lets hope other hotels pick up on this successful move forward.
