Oh, to be neat and pretty!
Most people rely on products for grooming and beautification. We all keep our stash of shampoos, conditioners, powders, make-up, colognes, perfumes, lotions, foot creams and the like. An average person apparently has a gazillion of it to use in a lifetime. It is not unknown to us that many of these products are made using chemicals. Although the ingredients on this products are generally safe to use even for longer periods, some are actually putting us at a health risk.
Thus, the authoring of the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 should ensure that consumers are protected. One would think that a bill like this has been in place before. Well, there was one and it was the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. But as it is, the stipulations to this old bill is not stringent. The manufacturer, for example, isn’t required to register their products. Only, some conscientious companies do volunteer to do this. The FDA also does not do rigorous reviews and tests, even before products are sold. Thus, the possibility of harmful beauty items reaching consumers is very present.
The latest bill, authored by Reps. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, aims to close gaps such as this. And this is a measure that has extreme need, as tons of beauty products are introduced in the market monthly.
The beauty industry is reportedly not supporting this measure, which is quite expected if I may say so. But in the end, it’s all about the health and safety of consumers.
