Salmonella in Eggs
About 550 Million eggs coming from two farms in the United States, particularly in Iowa, has been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Margaret Hamburg, the FDA chief, said that the recalls have started early this month, when the state of Iowa had recalled about 380 Million eggs from the Iowa Wright County Egg, which have been found positive from salmonella. A few weeks following that, 170 eggs were also recalled in the Hillendale Farm when it tested positive for the same poisonous element.
These eggs have already been distributed in many stores in the Midwest and under different brand names. Although the FDA says, the eggs have specific plant number and package date in its packaging, thus consumers can check it here.
These eggs have actually been packed and sold from four months ago and have been eaten by consumers, prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue a warning as cases of salmonella poisoning have risen. No deaths have been documented and reported yet but those affected have had severe abdominal pains, fever and diarrhea within 72 hours of exposure. The cases are expected to rise in the next few weeks.
A person cannot tell if the egg he or she is buying is laden with salmonella just by looking at it. It’s best to check with the store owner or the FDA alert website itself to see if the box is part of the recalled items.
The farms in Iowa have already been inspected and cleared of salmonella as of press time.
