Tips for Take Out Waste Reduction
Take out food…they are very convenient and easy to get. You just have to dial a number and in less than an hour, there they are, on your doorstep. But the other side of the story is, these take out food are notorious for being such a waste; what with all the foam containers and plastic wares they let you use. How many of these do they give away with each take out customers?
You may love take out food so much, but you can still do your part reducing its waste by doing the following:
1. Refuse the disposables. Since you are probably eating the take out at home, tell the person taking your order that they need not include those plastic utensils. You can use your own silverware. In fact, it’s better to use those than plastic. I personally have trouble with plastic as they easily break when I’m trying to slice my chicken or something. You may not also need those paper towels or tissues. If you have the takeout delivered at work, then you might as well keep utensils in your drawer for times like this.
2. Reuse containers. In our household, we do have a cabinet full of plastic containers from our favorite take out place. We use this to store soap and leftovers and they are microwavable too, so they come pretty handy.
3. Get rid of your wastes properly. Segregate as usual and learn how to compost waste. You can get a lot from those noodles, napkins and brown boxes from take out restos.
