Flexitricity Part of Winning Low Carbon London Initiative
- Company’s Smart Grid Technology to Demonstrate how new Technologies and Active Network Management Will Help Meet London’s low Carbon Goals
PR Newswire — November 30, 2010
LONDON and EDINBURGH, Scotland, November 30, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — A UK company, Flexitricity (http://www.flexitricity.com), today announced its participation in UK Power Networks’ winning project: Low Carbon London, a GBP24.3 million project awarded by Ofgem.
Described as a “smart city” initiative for London that will explore how to best use new technologies and active network management, Low Carbon London will also seek to understand when, how and why customers use energy and how this can be influenced. The project will support several existing low carbon schemes, such as Transport for London’s Plugged in Places, which encourages use of electric cars. The project will be carried out in partnership with a number of organisations, including Flexitricity and UK Power Networks.
“Flexitricity is delighted with today’s announcement and we are looking forward to actively engaging with UK Power Networks and the other partners to deliver a city-scale demonstration of how the UK can leverage technology like ours to meet the new demands of a low carbon economy,” said Dr Alastair Martin, Managing Director, Flexitricity.
As London adopts low carbon technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles there will be an increasing reliance upon technology like Flexitricity’s to provide electricity networks with the flexibility and the consumer participation required. Flexitricity combines small, controllable generators and flexible electricity loads to create a low-carbon source of reserve energy that can be utilised by National Grid, the UK’s network operators or electricity suppliers to respond to short-term system, network or trading requirements.
Basil Scarsella, Chief Executive of UK Power Networks, said: “The success of this bid is tremendous news for sustainability in London. It means we can start developing an electricity network that not only supports London’s existing and planned low carbon strategies, but can also accommodate the many different demands on the network we will face in 2020.”
Many London businesses are sitting on untapped sources of revenue in their standby generators, electricity consuming equipment and combined heat and power (CHP) generators. Flexitricity’s smart grid provides the ideal opportunity to access this revenue, which can exceed GBP100,000 per year on a single, medium-sized industrial site.
