Flood claims 12 lives in Nigeria

IBADAN, Nigeria (Xinhua) – The Nigerian police and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Sunday confirmed 12 persons dead from the flood disaster in southwest Oyo state on Friday and Saturday. Southwest Director of NEMA Iyiola Akande told reporters in Ibadan, the state capital that seven people died and five others missing in the flood.

Akande added that three major bridges also collapsed in the flood that affected 11 local government areas around the capital city.

Similarly, state police spokesperson Femi Okanlawon said five people were found dead at Odo -Ona Elewe in Oluyole Local Government Area.

The flooding followed about 12 hours of heavy rainfall, which started at 5.30 p.m. local time on Friday.

State deputy governor Moses Adeyemo who visited the Eleyele dam site to assess the situation, said private helicopters from Lagos are on their way to Ibadan to rescue residents from the roofs of their houses.

Adeyemo called for urgent Federal Government assistance to deal with the situation, saying that the disaster is beyond the state government to handle.

He said at Apete, one of the worst flooded areas, that the government is making efforts to rescue trapped persons.
