Rain-triggered landslide kills three in China

XI’AN (Xinhua) — A rain-triggered landslide killed three people and injured another two on Tuesday in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, local authorities said.

The landslide happened at around 8:30 a.m. in Chaoyu Township of Weibin District in the city of Baoji, burying a three-wheeled tractor and five locals, a spokesperson with the city’s fire brigade said.

The tractor’s driver and four local residents helping him pull his vehicle out of the mire were buried in the landslide, the spokesperson said.

Rescuers from the fire brigade worked for three hours before retrieving all five victims. Three were confirmed dead at the scene and the other two were sent to hospital for treatment.

This was the second rain-triggered landslide in Shaanxi Province in four days. A landslide on Saturday buried several workshops in the suburbs of the provincial capital Xi’an. Seventeen were confirmed dead and another 15 remained missing.
