Earth Hour 2009

earthhour2World Wildlife Fund is asking individuals, businesses, governments and organizations around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour – on Saturday, March 28 at 8:30 pm to make a global statement and to demonstrate commitment to finding solutions as part of the first ever global vote for action on climate change.

So far, more than 1,000 cities in more than 80 countries have pledged to take part in the event – sweeping across the Earth from time zone to time zone – motivating people to turn out all non-essential lights in their homes and businesses and to join the global movement for change.

Participating restaurants, bars and hotels will dim their electric lights and serve dinner and drinks by candlelight, performance venues will power down their non-essential exterior lighting, music performances go acoustic,  participating schools will kick off e-waste competitions and collect e-waste such as old mobile phones and computers from their communities, to be re-purposed instead of sent to landfills.

In Los Angeles, actor Edward Norton is the official ambassador for Earth Hour 2009 with support from actress Janeane Garofalo and musicians Alanis Morissette, Coldplay, Gavin DeGraw, KT Tunstall and many others. The global partners for Earth Hour 2009 are Esurance, Cox Enterprises, The Coca-Cola Company, Wells Fargo and Hewlett-Packard.

During Earth Hour 2009, lights are slated to go out on some of the world’s most iconic buildings and landmarks including:

• The Las Vegas Strip
• Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco
• Sears Tower in Chicago
• Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame in Paris
• Sydney Opera House
• Christ the Redeemer in Brazil
• Niagara Falls
• Coliseum in Rome
• Stockholm Castle
