In an effort to contribute towards the evolution of the eco-friendly awareness the world is pretty much occupied right now, the Philippines is now on the verge of joining the abundant number of players going eco-friendly using its natural resources in the mold of pineapple clothing that are expected to sell at about $1,000 to $3,000.

The whole concept was based on research at how meticulous the European market is regarding the environment.

For the record, the Philippines is well-known for their “Barong Tagalog”, a formal wear that is made from piña/ pineapple.

THE Philippines plans to sell high-end “green dresses” made from pineapple cloth and priced at $1,000 to $3,000 to the European Union, an official said yesterday.

“In Europe, the people are very environment conscious and they want green products even if the price is a bit higher,” Science and Technology Secretary Estrella Alabastro said.

Yesterday, no less than President Arroyo modeled a rose-colored coat and dress ensemble made from pineapple cloth and dyed using young coconut husks at the World Trade Center, where 10 science ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations joined her in donning the piña dresses at the opening of the 8th Asean Science and Technology Week.

“One sample of coconut derivative is this dye that went into this particular dress I’m wearing. This is one example of how an indigenous product like coconut can make its mark in this modern day and age,” Mrs. Arroyo said.

Alabastro said the couture dresses and Barong Tagalog made from piña, priced between $1,000 and $2,000, could be marketed in Europe.
