Keeping Mercury Far from Earth
Every now and then there are government officials that do something properly and Eco-Friendly Tip would like to bring to your attention one particular act of eco-friendly living that took place in the state of Indiana over the past year.
There was a program created by the state of Indiana that saw salvage yards remove switches from cars in junkyards. These switches were of course filled with mercury as that is how the car is designed normally and the salvage yards were given rewards for the switches they were able to pull and sell back to the state. It’s a very simple and very eco-friendly program if you think about it, but it is also a program that has the ability to change quite a bit.
This was illustrated by the fact that 77 pounds of mercury that might have made it into the ground were removed from brakes and lights of junk cars and they are now safely going to be reused in further designs. It’s a very interesting program and one that could do a lot of good for the environment and our eco-friendly lifestyles if it is recreated in the other states of the country.
