Seattle City Employees On The Move with Zipcar
I like Zipcar and know quite a few people who use it and love it, which is why I was happy to read that the company has paired up with the good people of Seattle, Washington. Let me just say that being a former resident of the Emerald City, if anyone deserves the services Zipcar offers, Seattle city employees should be at the top of the list!
Zipcar, which is the world’s largest provider of cars on demand by the hour or day, just announced its’ partnership with the City of Seattle providing to provide all city employees access to its cost-effective, convenient and environmentally friendly car sharing service.
There are approximately 10,500 city employees in Seattle who can benefit from the team-up, which will enable them to take alternate transit to work and also offer the assurance that they can have access to a car at the office for personal or business trips – with Zipcar, the rates include gas, insurance, maintenance and 180 free miles per day.
Offering Seattle city employees a Zipcar memberships is a great addition to Seattle’s Commute Trip Reduction program, which encourages employees to leave their car at home and use public transit, walk, and bike or carpool to work instead. The city currently offers a $72.00 monthly transit subsidy to encourage its employees not to drive to work and more than 3,000 Seattle city employees already take part in the program.
In a 2008 survey in Seattle, fifty percent of those who responded said they increased their public transit usage since joining Zipcar. National surveys conducted by Zipcar consistently show that more than fifty percent of members sell or avoid buying a car, and reduce vehicle miles traveled by nearly forty percent. In Seattle, this represents an annual reduction of 2,623,620 gallons of gas and 25,449 tons of carbon dioxide.
The new Zipcar office in Seattle is located downtown at 380 Union Street, which was formerly the Washington State Department of Licensing.
