African Mining Week (AMW) 2026 has officially been launched, setting the stage for a major gathering of mining companies, investors, policymakers and industry stakeholders later this year. The event will focus on emerging investment opportunities across Africa’s minerals sector as global demand intensifies for energy-transition resources.
Africa remains the world’s leading producer of several critical minerals, including platinum group metals, cobalt, chromium and manganese. These resources continue to attract growing interest from international markets, particularly the U.S., China and Europe, as countries work to secure resilient supply chains.
Africa’s role in the global critical minerals market
AMW 2026 will run under the theme, “Mining the future: Critical resources, sustainability, and community development.” The program will emphasize Africa’s strategic importance in supplying the minerals required for clean energy technologies while advancing responsible and sustainable mining practices.
Building on momentum from the 2025 edition, discussions will explore pathways for long-term market growth, environmental protection and socioeconomic advancement across the continent. Panels will examine how African nations are strengthening their position as global hubs for energy-transition minerals.
Countries such as Zimbabwe, Mali, Namibia and Malawi are advancing local value-addition policies aimed at reducing raw mineral exports and increasing domestic economic returns. Sessions will cover opportunities across the mining value chain, from exploration and extraction to processing and industrialization.
Participants will gain insight into how collaboration between governments and investors can strengthen supply chains and unlock Africa’s full mineral potential.
ESG, sustainability and community development take center stage
Environmental stewardship will remain a central pillar of AMW 2026. Financial institutions including the Africa Finance Corporation, World Bank, IFC and Afreximbank increasingly align funding with ESG performance, shaping project development across the sector.
Discussions will assess how renewable energy solutions can lower emissions, improve energy security and enhance project bankability. Topics will include Power Purchase Agreements, Independent Power Producer models, energy wheeling and onsite power generation for mining operations.
Community development will also feature prominently throughout the event. AMW 2026 will highlight mining projects that deliver measurable socioeconomic impact through job creation, supplier development, skills transfer and gender empowerment.
Sessions will unpack tax frameworks, local content requirements and community-benefit structures that influence project execution. The agenda will reinforce mining’s potential to act as a driver of inclusive and sustainable growth across Africa.
African Mining Week 2026 will take place alongside African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2026 from October 12–16 in Cape Town.
