As the world observes Earth Day 2025, Greenpeace Philippines is urging candidates in the upcoming midterm elections to put climate justice at the heart of their policy platforms.
The environmental organization challenged aspiring public officials with a direct question:
“Paano mo ipaglalaban ang kinabukasan ng mga Pilipino?” (How would you fight for the future of Filipinos?)
The call comes amid intensifying climate impacts in the country, with six typhoons battering the Philippines within 30 days last year and 2024 officially recorded as the hottest year ever. Greenpeace stressed that the 2025 elections must serve as a referendum on climate action.
“Climate change is already threatening our rights to food, water, health, and security,” said Lea Guerrero, Country Director of Greenpeace Philippines. “Candidates must go beyond promises and deliver bold, people-centered solutions.”

Environmental advocates mark Earth Day 2025 with a call for climate justice.
To guide both voters and candidates, Greenpeace launched a 5-point Climate Justice Agenda, which includes:
-
Champion communities with inclusive, rights-based adaptation
-
Hold polluters accountable and make them pay for climate damage
-
Back a Just Energy Transition and shift away from fossil fuels
-
Promote health-focused climate policies
-
Mainstream climate justice at all levels of governance
Greenpeace warns that without urgent and systemic action, the climate crisis will only worsen existing problems like poverty, hunger, and inequality—key issues that matter to Filipino voters.
“This Earth Day, let’s demand real action because our lives and our future depend on it. The climate fight is everyone’s fight,” Guerrero concluded.
